ORIGINS
The "Junior Theatre" which catered for young people of secondary school age, was founded in 1955 by the Middlesbrough Little Theatre Company (MLT). In 2003, due to demand, we changed our name to “Middlesbrough Youth Theatres” (MYT) and now cater for young people from the age of 7 to 25 in the following groups.

KIDSTAGE
(Age 7 – 11 (pre--secondary). This group meets each Saturday morning where they tackle in a fun way many of the basic theatre skills. They are given the opportunity to take part in MLT productions when applicable, as well as productions performed by the slightly older Junior Theatre group. This included their production of “Beauty and the Beast” in November 2011. In recent years they have also performed at the Saltburn Drama Festival and have won several awards.

JUNIOR THEATRE
(Age 11 – 18). This group meets every Saturday morning to take part in drama, voice and dance workshops. The group has been in existence for over 50 years and has achieved many accolades throughout their history. The group has performed many North East premieres and full--length musicals have been written for them – all performed on the professional stage at the Middlesbrough Theatre. They have also toured and a few years ago performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Some of its past members have forged successful careers in the performing arts and there are many talented individuals within the group today who are set to follow in their footsteps.

STAFFING
The artistic director of MYT is Wendy Lowe who has many years of experience in working with young people in a theatrical environment. Wendy is assisted by several group leaders, together with our company choreographer and musical director.
